Post subject: Texas v. Winnipeg (Howe vs. officials) Reply with quote

Gordie Howe's a 47-year-old boy McMurty says
by David Allen (star staff writer)

Attorney-General Roy McMurty said yesterday his office won't be "intimidated by the sports establishment and it's flunkies and hangers on."

McMurty, continuing his campaign against hockey violence, told reporters outside the Legislature that hocket officials are not "out of touch with the community."
Since saying Tuesday he will lay criminal charges for unnecessarily violent play. McMurty has been ridiculed by the National Hockey League (NHL) and World Hockey Association (WHA)

Gordie Howe, playing president of the WHA's Houston Aero's, says the attorney general would have to "put skates on to catch us."

Another theme of the Wake that helps in the understanding of the paradoxical shift from cliché to archetype is "pastimes are past times". The dominant technologies of one age become the games and pastimes of a later age. In the twentieth century the number of past times that are simultaneously available is so vast as to create cultural anarchy. When all the cultures of the world are simultaneously present, the work of the artist in the elucidation of form takes on new scope and new urgency. Most men are pushed into the artist role. The artist cannot dispense with the principle of doubleness and interplay since this kind of hendiadys-dialogue is essential to the very structure of consciousness, awareness, and autonomy. Pastime of past times.

Speaking of pastimes with no socially redeeming value...

Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons and one of the fathers of tabletop role playing games, died on Tuesday at the age of 69. He had suffered from heart problems.

Post subject: officials of the flood Reply with quote

In such a fluid world we should by all rights be building boats rather than houses. But this essay is a sort of ark; or dwelling of the mind, designed to float and navigate; and we should be wise with or without covenants, to provide ourselves with some such shel in everything, rather than rely on conservative structures. For a very profound inundation is at hand. After us comes the deluge: more probably than not, however, before that and out of it's epigrammatic sequence.

Meantime, where the officials of the Flood, as they might be called, are concerned. We have to serve them out with gasmasks, light navigable craft of a seaworthy and inconspicuous type, and furnish them with instructions as to currents, winds, head-swells, maritime effluvia, Saragossa [sic] seas, doldrums, sharks, water-spouts, and sea serpents. The complete equipment of an inspector of the Flood would be of such a technical description that it is impossible, however, to more than hint at it.

-Wyndham Lewis, The Art of Being Ruled, p. 95

I would add a compact hot air balloon and a length of carrot rope to list of supplies that the officials of the flood require.

SATURDAY APRIL 5, 2008

CORINNE MCLUHAN
(born Corinne Lewis)

April 11, 1912- April 4, 2008, died peacefully of natural causes at her home in Wychwood Park surrounded by her family. She was the beloved and loving wife and confidante of the late Marshall McLuhan (1980); dear sister of the late Carolyn Lewis Weinman (1996); devoted and loving mother of Eric (Sabina Ellis), Mary, Teri, Stephanie (Niels Ortved), Elizabeth (Don Myers), and Michael (Danuta Valleau); proud grandmother of Jennifer Colton Theut, Emily McLuhan Boms, Anna and Andrew McLuhan, Claire and Madeleine McLuhan Myers, Arthur, Mark, and Gwendolyn McLuhan; and great- grandmother of Olivia, Charlotte, and Gillian.

Corinne was known for her beauty, grace, intelligence, wit, and Southern charm. She embraced life fully and enjoyed many rich experiences and wonderful friendships along the way. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Corinne proudly remained an American all her life. She graduated from Texas Christian University and went on to do graduate work in theatre at the leading drama school of the day, Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. It was there that she met her future husband, Marshall McLuhan, a graduate student at Cambridge University in England, who had travelled to Pasadena to visit his mother, a drama coach at the Playhouse.

The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wendy Brown, for her years of unflagging and tender care, and to special caregivers Sally, Bona, Tasie, Amy, and particularly Cynthia, who has stayed at Corinne's side day and night for the last four years.

There will be a funeral mass at Holy Rosary Church, 354 St. Clair Avenue West on Monday April 7 at 1:30 PM.

BOB: McLuhan was the first to ask, as far as I know: "Is there life before death?"

And there it is in the billboard behind the street sign.

I guess McLuhan could claim this as a "xenochrony" for him... in retrospect?
