BOB: The text I read from during the show seems to've been cut off in the middle so I thought I'd post it here (actually not here but on the iON forum).

It's from Prof. Donald F. Theall's PhD thesis for Marshall McLuhan in 1954 (Theall was McLuhan's first PhD student - only 24, 25, 26 years old [writing a PhD takes several years, at least] and understanding McLuhan's thought 20 years before anyone else did).

As a matter of fact, Don was forced later (by despairing colleagues of McLuhan) to write a book explaining McLuhan's "theories", THE MEDIUM IS THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, in 1971, so people could begin to contemplate the invisible environment of McLuhan - but not before McLuhan tried to stop the publishing of the book. He failed and we are the wiser for it.

The PhD is titled "Communication Theories in Modern Poetry: Yeats, Pound, Eliot, and Joyce."

It's the best record of what McLuhan taught in his daily classroom (the professors in the English Department at the University of Toronto who were on the Thesis Committee to hear Don's defense of his PhD did not even recognize that Don's PhD content was straight out of McLuhan's classroom mouth [McLuhan was on the committee, too, but kept his mouth shut] but were so impressed with Don's themes and concepts that they thought it heralded a whole new school of literary criticism and should be published... and told him so) - the literary background for the biggest "scientific" discovery of the second half of the 20th Century... and, of course, the preparation for the coolest breakthrough in human history (mortar-wise speaking) - iONdom!!!
