Speaking of Crowley...

In a kind of "I made it all up but it came true anyway" moment, my favorite author James Branch Cabell included some nods to occultism in his books almost as manipian satire, hinting at great esoteric kknowledge on his part. Crowley hit on this as was convinced JBC was some great initiate where JBC was only a writer trying to put out a good book.

And this, one of Crowley's letters to/about James Branch Cabell. So me and the great beast are great admierers of JBC.

http://www.thelema.ca/156/People/Crowley/Another%20Note%20on%20Cabell.html

I DO find very profound and poignant things in JBC's writtings, but mainly he's witty and funny. The most important thing idea he conveyed is the two truths, the only things we humans know for sure... "We copulate, and we die."

That idea about says it all for me.

James Branch Cabell...he was a widely/wildly known author in the early part of the 20th century. He got re-popular in the seventies due to his novels being re-released in paperback.

I'm barely treading links these days, gasping for silence...

I'm definitely going to check this out, but then there's also the Bobshow and other re-listenings on my plate (Bob & Dennis Young especially)...

In the memetime, I promise you can spare 10 minutes to enjoy this:

Very cool letter...so it looks like caball took parts of
Crowleys gnostic mass for his book or was it vice versa?

Cabell did this thing all the time.
Cabell, in what I guess you could call manippien fashion, alluded to something (crowley's rite) as if he, the author had indepth knowledge about it, and you the reader, didn't.

Crowley didn't really get it that Cabell, though philosophical, Cabell was basically a writter trying to intrigue and entertain people (and occasionally get a laugh.)

You're clearly more familiar with the subject (and I'm not fundamentally opposed to learning that Crowley didn't get something), but could it be that Crowley recognized Cabell's trick -- and recognized that that is THE basic "trick" -- and played along to give seeming creedence to Cabell's 'insider knowledge'??
